While dry skin is a type, dehydrated skin is a concern that can come knocking on anybody’s door (or should we say skin?). It could cause a spike in breakouts, dullness, sensitivity and so on. What’s causing your skin to get dehydrated? Your A/C, your heater or your lifestyle may be doing it. Tightness, dullness, sensitivity and inflammation are what characterise it. Dehydration can happen to anyone and it can throw your skin out of whack!

Dehydrated skin is a concern, not a type
What this essentially means is that all skin types can get dehydrated—oily skin included. This is because dehydrated skin is caused by a lack of water, not oil.
Whereas dry skin is predominantly tight, itchy and flaky, dehydrated skin tends to misbehave occasionally. This could mean any or all of the following:
- Sudden breakouts
- Heightened sensitivity
- Dullness and discolouration—changes in skin colour
- Low response to skincare that otherwise works for you
- Faster wrinkling and ageing
We know—all of this is too stressful. Fortunately, dehydrated skin is a temporary condition that can be set right by making simple skincare and lifestyle changes. What follows is our top 5 picks:
Load up on water
While this one may seem pretty obvious, we often turn a blind eye to it. There’s a myriad of skincare products that can deliver hydrating ingredients to your skin. However, when it comes to keeping dehydration at bay, internal hydration takes the crown.
So consume plenty of fluids and make sure that water is your primary choice of drink. Moreover, if you’re an alcohol or caffeine-lover, keep your consumption in check. These drinks are masters at dehydrating the body and skin.
Another great way to give your body a fair dose of hydration is to consume water-rich foods. Some of our all-time favourites are sprouts, tomatoes, cucumber, melons and oranges.
Give facial serums a shot
If dehydration is wreaking havoc on your skin, incorporate a serum into your skincare routine. But how are serums different from moisturisers, you ask? Most moisturisers are thicker and creamier than serums which are much thinner and lighter. So, while moisturisers are designed to create a barrier over the skin’s surface, serums are made to be absorbed into the skin. All in all, moisturisers can’t replicate the role of serums and vice versa.
If you want to reap maximum benefits from your serum, look for one infused with hyaluronic acid. It’s one of the best skincare actives (natural ingredients that work at the cellular level) for enhancing hydration.
Bid farewell to all that gross stuff!
