All about face scrubs—the good, the bad and the ugly!

Exfoliation seems to be everybody’s go-to routine irrespective of their skin concern. However, not too long ago, the product category faced a lot of flak after Kylie Jenner launched her walnut scrub. Apparently, it received backlash for its walnut shell content which was supposedly damaging to the skin. Does that mean we should end our relationship with face scrubs? Nah! What is exfoliation, really?

Exfoliation is the process of removing dead skin cells, dirt and grime from your pores. It is necessary to do this in order to have clear and healthy skin. However, overdoing exfoliation can be extremely harmful and cause inflammation and micro tears in the skin. So as we always advocate—keep it minimal, girls!

There are two types of exfoliants:

Physical exfoliation

Physical exfoliation is quite literal—you physically scrub your face with a product that contains tiny granules or microbeads. This can be very gratifying as it leaves your skin feeling soft and smooth. It is very important to remember to be gentle though, as scrubbing your face too hard can cause tears and even enlarge your pores.

Chemical exfoliation

Chemical exfoliation, on the other hand, uses chemicals that get rid of dead skin cells and dirt from your pores. You do not have to scrub these on to your face; a combination of chemicals in these products do the job for you. Easy-peasy, right?


Should you stop exfoliating altogether?

No! As we said before, exfoliation is imperative when it comes to skincare. You just have to do it the right way. What is the right way to exfoliate, you ask?

  • Use a scrub only once or twice (at the most) a week.
  • When exfoliating make sure you’re gentle and apply minimum pressure to your face.
  • Do not use facial brushes to scrub your face as that can spread bacteria causing breakouts.
  • For oily skin, use a physical scrub once a week.

Be patient with acne-prone skin

While face scrubs are good for the skin, stay away from physical scrubs when you have acne. Wait for the acne to clear up by way of

medication or the right products. Scrubbing the skin with acne will only make the bacteria spread causing more acne. This is not to say that you can’t use face scrubs ever—just be patient and use it when your skin is relatively clear.

Make your own scrub

If you’re the DIY kinda girl, here’s a scrub for you to try. Mix ½ cup uncooked oats with 2 tbsp honey and 1 tsp nutmeg. Gently rub this mix on your skin and then leave it on for about 10 minutes. While the oatmeal has anti-inflammatory properties, the honey will add the correct amount of moisture to your skin while you exfoliate.

DIY it or use a chemical exfoliant available in the market but what can be said with certainty is that face scrubs contribute to clear and fresh skin. Just make sure you use it sparingly and gently!
