We’ve been washing our faces for as long as we can remember and it’s become second-nature to us. Of course, everyone knows how to wash their face, right? Grab a cleanser and wash your face with it! Well, it’s not thaaaat simple. Get ready for a tiny bit of existential crisis. Here are a few mistakes you might be guilty of while using a cleanser…
You’re using the wrong cleanser
The wrong cleanser can do more harm than good to your skin. Find a face wash that you look forward to using and make sure it’s a cleanser that doesn’t dry you out because the point of skincare is not to take away your natural glow.
You’re applying it wrong
Yep, there is a right way to apply a cleanser and different cleansers require different methods. If you’re using a gel or a foam cleanser, apply it on to wet skin. Allow the lather to sit on your skin for at least a minute to give the ingredients time to work. But keep in mind that it is extremely important to be gentle. Massage your cleanser lightly on to your skin and rinse off.
You’re using hot water to wash your face
Hot water on your face is a big no-no. It can strip your skin of natural oils leading to dryness. Lukewarm water is best for washing your face. Guilty? We know we were!
You’re washing your face while showering
We’re all for multitasking but washing your face in the shower isn’t exactly ideal. Remember that the water in your shower will most likely be too hot for your facial skin. When you wash your face after your shower, it helps remove any shampoo residue—something that can clog pores if not washed off.
You’re not removing makeup first
Simply washing your face isn’t enough to remove a full face of makeup! Before cleansing, remove all traces of makeup and then reach for the face wash. But if you have a makeup remover that does the job of removing every trace of dirt and grime, it’s a win for you. You can skip the face washing step!
You’re washing your face with unclean hands
You don’t want to know the kind of bacteria your hands pick up from various surfaces! So make sure you wash your hands thoroughly before they go anywhere near your face.
You’re overwashing your face
Typically, washing once or twice a day is the usual recommendation. Refrain from overwashing as it can irritate your skin and lead to overproduction of oil (oh, the irony!).
You’re rubbing your skin too hard
Give your skin the tender loving care it deserves by patting your skin dry without rubbing it aggressively. While you do that, use a clean towel!
So today, when you reach out for your cleanser, remember the above pointers for the sake of your skin!
