Ask us what self-care is and we’d instantly tell you it’s a nice, long, relaxing facial! But what happens when you can’t get to the salon to do the job? You simply DIY the process! It’s great for the skin and a gentle reminder not to give up on yourselves.
So, light up some candles, put the stereo on and set the mood for some lavish self-pampering.
Start with a deep cleanse
To squeeze out maximum benefits from your facial, you should make sure that your face is free from all the gross stuff. Even when you’re home, your skin hoards a lot of gunk—think dust, natural oils, sweat and perhaps, residual skincare.
So, start with a deep cleansing face wash. Using your fingers, work the face wash into your skin by massaging in circular motions. Pay special attention to areas of congestion like the sides of your nose, the back of your ears and your forehead. Finally, wash off with lukewarm water and pat dry.
Move on to a mild exfoliator
Once your skin is squeaky clean, it’s time for some exfoliation. This will slough off the dead skin cells sitting on your skin and open up the pores. Post exfoliation, your skin would be ready to soak in all the good things coming it's way.
If you don’t have an exfoliant, don’t fret. You could easily make one at home by slapping together some basic ingredients. Here’s one of the simplest DIY face scrubs:
Mix 1 tbsp honey with 1 tbsp sugar. Add in a few drops of lemon juice and stir well. Apply it to your face and massage for a few minutes, before washing it off with warm water.
Give it some steam
This step is the simplest, yet the most calming of all. Bring a small pot of water to boil, and pour the water into a bowl. If you want this step to double up as an aromatherapy session, add in a few drops of essential oil, herbs or some tea bags.
Then, drape a towel over your head and position your face over the hot water bowl. Now, let the steam do its magic. This step will open up your pores and soften the skin.
Apply a face mask
It’s time to make hay while the sun shines. Since steaming has left all your pores open, use a face mask to draw out all the impurities. Again, if you don’t have face masks at home, you can whip one up in no time. Simple ingredients like milk, bananas, oatmeal make for great DIY facial masks.
Reach for a moisturiser
After getting your face mask off, layer your skin with some moisturiser. Remember that at this point, your skin is highly receptive. Moreover, all that heat from the steam may have dried up your skin and a moisturiser will tend to that.
P.S: Since summers are here, a water-based moisturiser would be your best bet. It will do the job without making your skin greasy. Also, make sure that you also cater to the often-neglected spots like your neck and areas behind your earlobes.
Slather on a lip serum
Amidst nurturing our facial skin, a lot of us end up side-lining lip care. The lips, in fact, are as delicate as the under-eye areas and could really do with some TLC.
So, before you wrap things up and sink into your bed, slather on some lip serum. Not only will this keep chapping at bay, but it will also moisturise, nourish and soften your lips.
